FCT Shield 2025 – Inaugural Match

The inaugural FCT Shield match was held on 26th April 2025 at the University of Kelaniya Main Grounds, marking the beginning of a historic journey for the Faculty of Computing and Technology. Despite early morning rain delaying the start, the anticipation and excitement remained high as players and spectators awaited the first-ever match of the tournament.

The opening encounter featured Team CS taking on Team CT. CT won the toss and elected to field first, becoming the first team to make a strategic decision in FCT Shield history.

The tournament officially began with Hasitha Kumarathunga delivering the very first ball, faced by CS captain Pasindu Nimsara, who scored the first runs in FCT Shield history. Pasindu, along with Sandun Amantha, built the tournament’s first partnership, adding 25 runs before Ishanka Lakshan claimed the first wicket by dismissing Pasindu. Soon after, Shen Suraweera fell to Sanka Yasodana, giving CT early momentum.

However, CS responded strongly as Sandun Amantha and Suresh Bhanuka put together a valuable 35-run partnership, stabilizing the innings and building a competitive total. CS concluded their innings at 71 for 5 in 10 overs, with Sandun Amantha top scoring with an impressive 42 off 28 deliveries, while Pasindu Nimsara contributed 12 off 11.

In response, CT’s chase began on a dramatic note. Openers Sudesh Kumarasiri and Chamod Sapumal walked in with confidence, but the game quickly turned in the very first over. Damindu Prasadith delivered a stunning spell, dismissing Sudesh on the fourth ball and removing Ashen Ellawala on the very next delivery, leaving CT struggling at 3 for 2.

Chamod Sapumal and Sanka Yasodana attempted to rebuild the innings with a 21-run partnership, but Damindu struck again in the fourth over, dismissing Chamod and putting CT under further pressure at 24 for 3. The situation worsened when Rachitha was dismissed in the fifth over, leaving CT at 44 for 4, with CS firmly in control of the match.

At this critical moment, CT captain Loch Arachchige joined Sanka Yasodana at the crease. What followed was a remarkable turnaround that changed the course of the game. The pair displayed fearless intent and exceptional composure under pressure, launching a counterattack that shifted momentum rapidly.

Sanka Yasodana anchored the chase with aggressive stroke play, while Loch Arachchige provided explosive support. Boundaries flowed, confidence grew, and the pressure swung back onto CS. Their partnership proved to be the defining moment of the match.

In the eighth over, CT successfully chased down the target in stunning fashion. Sanka Yasodana played a match-winning innings of 38 off just 19 balls, while Loch Arachchige contributed a quick 17 off 8 deliveries, sealing one of the most memorable victories in FCT Shield history.

Although Damindu Prasadith delivered an outstanding bowling performance, finishing with figures of 3 for 14, the match ultimately belonged to the game-changing partnership of Sanka and Loch.

CT secured a historic win in the opening match of the FCT Shield, powered by resilience, leadership, and an unforgettable display of teamwork.
